Self-publishing and e-book sales have been all over the map since the first e-book readers started becoming popular. For a while it seemed as though print was dead, especially after major book retailer Borders shuttered its stores. However, 2015 saw an increase in paper book sales and a decrease overall in the number of e-books sold. It also saw a trend toward smartphone reading as opposed to on specific e-book reader devices. 2015 also saw some huge self-published authors make it big like Andy Weir’s ‘The Martian’ being released as a major motion picture and Jamie McGuire’s ‘Beautiful Redemption’ making its way to Walmart store shelves. So what does all of this mean going into 2016?
There has always been a battle in the publishing world as to whether it’s better to go the self-publishing route or the traditional publishing route. New evidence is suggesting that the right solution is to actually try to find a hybrid approach to publishing, mixing both traditional and self-publishing methods. Jamie McGuire found success by having her book hit store shelves in a traditional way, but she immediately returned to self-publishing because that format also has its benefits. She explains that not all books work well on the shelf. Hybrid publishing methods tend to yield the best financial results, which is also a big positive.
Trends that are likely to continue into the new year all come back to one company – Amazon. While most e-book subscription services are floundering and shutting down their services, like Oyster, Amazon’s Unlimited program is chugging along. Amazon is also making moves toward brick-and-mortar stores by opening its own in Seattle. An Amazon bookstore opens up all sorts of possibilities for the self-publishing industry. Will more self-published books become available in paper form now that Amazon is dismantling the traditional norms? Only time will tell.
2016 should be an interesting year for self-published authors. Check out the article below to see all the predictions for indie authors in the new year!
