2015 is coming to a close, which means it’s time to make your New Year’s resolution! Instead of overwhelming yourself with too many difficult goals, now is the time to set a practical goal that you can actually accomplish. Chances are you already have a decent writing routine, so this year your resolution should focus on sharpening your book marketing strategy. If you’re like most self-published authors then this is an aspect of the publishing world that you could stand to enhance this year. Here are some of the best ways to hone your book marketing skills starting in 2016!
The first step is to plan your marketing goals early. Do you want to sell 10,000 books? Do you simply want to increase revenue from one of your released books? Whatever your goal, write it down and be specific. Give yourself an exact number of copies you want to sell or an exact amount of revenue you want to generate with your work. If you’re specific then you have a chance to design your marketing strategy around your goal.
Now is the time to truly hone your target audience. Remember, “everyone” is not a target audience and trying to market your book to that vague of a demographic will only result in disappointment. Take the time to craft a reader persona for the individual who you imagine to be the core of your audience. This is a fictional person who you think would be interested in your work. Think about their desires and their interests and then get to work crafting a strategy for how you would reach that person. This can be an extremely valuable exercise when deciding who you should be trying to reach with your marketing campaign.
This year you should try to really keep up to date with new marketing tactics and learn how to use modern tools to maximize your marketing productivity. Facebook, Twitter, instagram, Pinterest, and all the other social media sites are constantly updating their platforms with new types of content and new ways to display information. Jump on these as soon as you learn about them. If you’re fast then your fans will still find this content novel and might be more interested in seeing what you have to offer. Being behind the times is a death sentence in the modern world! There are also a bevy of new online tools that can help you schedule and manage your marketing campaigns. Learn how to use these so that your time online is not time wasted.
The new year is a time to become a better version of yourself. It’s also an opportunity to learn how to market yourself. Make this a priority and you’ll definitely be thankful.
