Kindle Book Serials – Becoming Prolific Publishing Kindle Book Series
So you’ve taken the plunge and published your first fictional novel or factual guidebook on Kindle. Now all you have to do is sit back and watch the money roll in. WRONG!!!
Even if you are the next Ernest Hemingway or J K Rowling chances are your spectacular debut publication will languish in the stacks unnoticed amongst the hundreds of other titles published on Kindle every day.
Publishing an ebook on Kindle or any other on-line self publishing platform is not so far removed from conventional publishing. Publishers of hardcopy books are notoriously difficult to deal with. So much so that most wannabe authors simply give up. Why are they so difficult?
Publishing a hardcopy book for a first time author is an expensive venture and a serious gamble for the publisher. It isn’t just the cost of printing and distribution. Publishers routinely spend over half of the publishing budget promoting books. If you’re new they need to be absolutely certain that the book will be a hit.
Your Author Credentials
If you are an established author with a following, things are very different. Established authors like J K Rowling would have no difficulty finding a publisher for virtually anything they write. Why? Because they have dedicated fans who are willing to cue up in the rain at midnight to buy anything they write.
If you want to make a living selling fiction on Kindle then you need to put some effort into establishing your credentials as an author. One of the simplest ways to do this is to be prolific; to publish as much as you can until you gain a following.
Once you have established yourself as a reliable author you may even attain the holy grail of publishing, a name that people actually search. If you’re John Grisham or Terry Pratchett you know exactly what I’m writing about.
If you are lucky you will begin to build a fan base…people who will follow you on twitter, eagerly await each launch, buy and comment on everything you publish.
Building name for your self is the key to becoming a successful full-time writer.
Break Down Your Kindle Book Into a Series
So you have your novel finished and your ready to publish but it was such a hard slog that you really don’t feel like sharpening you pencils and writing a sequel just yet. What can you do to make the most of your manuscript?
Instead of publishing your life’s work in one go, why not break it up into nice even chunks and sell the entire book as a series of short stories. Publish six short 99-cent titles instead of one for $6.
99-Cent Kindle Books For Breakfast
One of the strongest segments on Kindle is the 99 cent article or short story. These are the 10-30 page documents that people consume like tissues. They buy volume one or maybe get it free (yes there is a way to publish a free article or fictional work on Kindle) while they are commuting to work by train using the instant buy feature without even thinking about the 99 cent cover price. A couple of days later they buy part 2 and so on.
The trick to writing for serialization is to focus on the characters and put them in discrete situations which can be told as a single episode in less than thirty pages just like any successful TV series.
