Phew. NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is officially over. Were you able to hit your 50k word goal? It’s no easy task. Only 18% of participants hit that goal last year, so you should be feeling especially good if your finished! It may have been a slog, but you at least have a great starting point for actually publishing a book. Here’s what you need to do next!
As always, revise, revise, revise. NaNoWriMo manuscripts are rushed by nature. Chances are you were trying desperately to hit your nearly 2,000 words per day benchmark without having enough time to pause and edit. Now is the time to really sit down and work through the revision process. It’s likely going to be longer and more challenging than usual, but you’ll need to do it if you don’t want your whole month’s worth of writing to go to waste!
While going through the revision process you should also be thinking ahead about how you’ll end up marketing your book. Consider who your target audience is and try to shape your book around them. Knowing this will make it much easier when you start outlining your marketing plan later on down the road. You should also be thinking hard about what the title of the book should be (if you haven’t come up with one already). By the time you’re finished with the revisions you should feel ready to work on the marketing and other business processes.
Don’t think the process is over! You’ll definitely need to hire an editor to take a pass at your manuscript. They’ll help you clean everything up and get it all formatted properly. And then you’ll feel really confident when you show your book off to potential retailers and distributors!
NaNoWriMo is not a sprint – it’s a marathon. The first part is over, but there’s still lots of work left to do!
