You’ve spent so much time and effort writing and editing your novel, so why settle for a rushed, hastily-written description? Your book’s description is a window into the world of your story. Don’t make these common mistakes when drafting your own book description!
Think of the book description as an extension of your writing. You wouldn’t want your book to be riddled with grammar, syntax, and spelling errors, right? Yet so many book descriptions suffer from these problems. Don’t lose a potential reader by having a sloppily-written description! If you can’t pay attention to the details in the description, then why should anyone think you paid attention to the details in the main story?
Speaking of details, don’t use the book description as an opportunity to outline the entire plot of your story! Your description is like an appetizer before the main course. It should prep your appetite without filling you up. You want to tantalize your audience and entice them to continue reading, not have them feel like they know exactly what they’re getting themselves into.
This is a mistake that many indie authors make. They fail to tell their potential audience the genre of the book in the description. Sure you might think you book is a genre-bending masterpiece that defies labels, but the truth of the matter is that many readers have very specific tastes. If they’re unsure what type of story you’re selling then they’ll likely gravitate toward something with a more firm identity.
Your description is not an afterthought. It’s one of the most essential marketing aspects of your story. Have it open doors for you, not close them.
